The single line over the Royal Albert Bridge was always a bottle-neck and until 1962 was controlled by conventional single line token working. This was replaced by Absolute Block working with Interlocking Levers which was far more efficient. 4950 Patshull Hall is about to give up the token, working the Up Milk from Penzance to London on 3 October 1959. Signalman J.D. Harris, a shareholder in the former GWR looks on as 1434 propels towards Saltash in July 1957. Laira had two of these type on allocation for a while in the 1950s for working Tavistock services, one of which involved this working; the weekday 1235 Plymouth to Saltash and 1325 Saltash to Tavistock South, hence the engine facing Tavistock as per normal branch working.
