BR Standard Brake Vans
Introduction
BR 20T Standard goods brake van was a modification of the LNER 'Toad E' design. A wooden vertically matchboarded body, 16ft 3in in length with a verandah at each end, was mounted centrally on to a steel underframe, 24ft in length. The principle differences from the LNER 'Toad E' were an increase in body height of 1¾in, extension of the footboards to the full length of the underframe, provision of horizontal grab rails along the edge of end platforms, and a standardistation on 1ft 6in spindle buffers. BR had an extensive construction programme which resulted in over 4,000 vans over a 12 year period.
Vehicles were built to diagrams 1/504 and 1/506 concurrently, and the difference between the two types was the brake gear. Diagram 1/504 covered vehicles with vacuum pipe and gauge, and with buffers at 5ft 8in centres, whilst Diagram 1/506 was for unfitted vehicles with buffers at 5ft 7 1/2in. Officially Diagram 1/504 applied to lots 2136, 2206 and 2741, whilst Diagram 1/506 covered 2137, 2207, 2349, 2350, 2477, 2478, 2605, 2606, 2868, 3012, 3129, but changes over the years caused piped vehicles to become unfitted, and non-fitted vehicles to have pipes and gauges fitted.
A number of minor design modifications appeared during the course of the the building programme for diagrams 1/504 and 1/506. The vertical grab rails fitted either side of the verandah doors were initially constructed in two sections, as on the LNER design, but from Lot 2206 a single piece rail, of the same overall length, was substituted.
